The story behind the Claddagh ring originated from the village of Claddagh where a young fisherman by the name of Robert Joyce was kidnapped by pirates and sold into slavery. Robert was passed into the hands of a goldsmith, it was here that he learnt the trade and began developing his own pieces. Many years later after he had established himself as a worthy goldsmith his freedom was regained and he was to return to the village of Claddagh. When he returned he was to marry his childhood sweetheart and carry on the goldsmith trade. As time went on and as the Irish people began to travel around the world so did the legend of Claddagh.
